The Amoeba: What it Takes to Know Where You are Going

Amoeba: “a single-celled animal that catches food and moves about by extending finger like projections of protoplasm.”

Do you know where you are headed? What are your goals? What do you hope to accomplish in your life? If you have not thought about the aforementioned questions you are living your life much like an amoeba. The amoeba exhibits no form and simply waits for food to come its way and engulfs it when it has the opportunity. There is no rhyme or reason as to why the amoeba moves and foresight is not a part of the equation with such an organzim. Following are three steps to ensure you are not living your life like the amoeba:

Have a Plan

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”
– Benjamin Franklin
The amoeba has no plan; however, it has an excuse as it is a single celled organism. You on the other hand have no excuse. Therefore, plan and take action toward what it is you are trying to accomplish. Not doing so is a waste of the talent and resources that have taken you to this point in your life.

Be discerning: Do not accept what is easy

Just because something is right in front of you does not mean you have to consume it. The amoeba on the other hand will expend an equal amount of resources regardless of the return. Your time and resources can only be spent once and usually what is easy is not worth your effort, talents or resources. Therefore, be discerning with how you spend your time and allocate your resources to do the most good.

Happen to the World

The amoeba simply moves to find the next food source and does not plan for the future. It also allows its environment to dictate it’s plans. We, on the other hand should be the ones changing and impacting the World. Not the other way around as this lends oneself to helplessness and dependency. Instead, think about how you can create a positive impact in the World with every breath that you take.

Final thoughts

In sum: have a plan, be discerning and happen to the World. What good did you accomplish today?
